Nation’s pet owners are spending an unprecedented amount of hours working from home with their puppies. And while man’s best friend can be a source of amazing comfort during these tough times, dogs may also impede the work process. Local dog-centric businesses have some advice for pet owners who are struggling to utilize an emotionally needy canine friend.

Utilize puzzles to occupy puppies throughout conference calls

Nothing interrupts a conference call like a dog wanting attention. According to Denise Einkauf, proprietor of Waggin’ Tails Daycare and Boarding, dogs are especially vulnerable to disrupting conference calls or videos because they are drawn to their owner’s voices. “If you sit there working, your dog is more likely to sit quietly,” she explained. “However, when your dog hears you talking, they are going to need your attention, and they are more inclined to disrupt your work.

Einkauf recommends using snacks to engage a puppy during important calls. Just like humans, dogs adore a good snack, also treats are a excellent tool for keeping a dog occupied. The trick to optimizing snacktime, is to integrate those snacks into a challenging game.
Dogs require training and physical exercise, but they also require mental exercise,” explained Einkauf. “If you make it a challenge, using a puzzle, by way of example, dogs can find that mental exercise.”

She noticed there are many commercially available puzzles, but pet owners can also quickly create their particular pup-pleasing puzzles with common household items. Einkauf recommended the website Amazon for some do-it-yourself dog puzzles. “It is also beneficial if you have children, because these are toys which the children can create,” she added.

Jose Morillo, proprietor of Camp Bow Wow, a dog daycare and boarder at California, recommends handing out the treat puzzles right before important meetings to take advantage of a preoccupied puppy. “Don’t wait until your interview is five minutes in to realize that your dog wants your attention,” he advised. Morillo is also the owner of the a new Camp Bow Wow location in Cypress that will be opening later that spring.

Maximize break time with a walk

Dogs supply the ideal chance to get out and around while adhering to social distancing. Morillo noted that even brief walks are great for puppies and humans alike. “Really, a fast walk round the block is all you and your dog need,” he explained. “It will truly blow steam off for the two of you.”

“When a dog has had workout, it will be a lot calmer and more inclined to provide you space as you operate,” Einkauf added.

Utilize this opportunity for coaching

Now is the best time to practice training, according to Morillo. The training does not have to be lengthy. “Fifteen minutes of training is equivalent to an hour of exercise,” Morillo said. “So even a small amount of training goes a very long way.”

The coaching does not have to be complicated or even overly practical. “Educating a dog a hint like’shake’ or’roll over’ is equally as valuable as an important command,” Morillo said.

Einkauf noted that pet owners do not require special experience to educate their puppies new tricks. “There are a lot of great YouTube stations out there that can teach owners how to train their dogs,” she explained.
